Vitamin C for overall health

Vitamin C, also referred to as ascorbic acid, is a water-soluble substance that is easily excreted from the body. For this reason, vitamin C must be provided via natural sources, such as fresh vegetables and fruits.

Vitamin C is an important antioxidant that helps fight against free radical damage and assists in the creation of collagen and the formation of red blood cells and bone. That's why it's essential to load up on vitamin C during times of illness and stress. In fact, vitamin C supplementation is great for improving overall health.

Additionally, the Journal of the American College for Nutrition states, "Evidence overwhelmingly points to the value of vitamin C in maintaining health and preventing cancer, cardiovascular disease and cataracts."

Foods that are a rich source of vitamin C include citrus fruits, bell peppers, rose hips, broccoli, tomatoes, green leafy vegetables and strawberries. Because vitamin C breaks down quickly, especially when cooked, it's important to eat many raw fresh fruits and vegetables.

Furthermore, vitamin C is beneficial for treating colds, flu and asthma. In fact, vitamin C deficiencies may cause symptoms related to weakened immunity, scurvy, anemia, poor digestion, nosebleeds, and joint swelling or pain.
